Over the weekend we faced strong winds and torrents of rain from the tropical wave named Invest 92L. The massive weather system caused some flooding and a few landslides, and we were reminded of the passing of Tropical Storm Erika just one year prior.

As the storm moved into the Caribbean Sea and away from Dominica on Monday night, a lightning storm brightened the night’s sky. I took this opportunity to capture lightning… my first real attempt.
Here are three images from that night session, captured in my backyard, overlooking Newtown and the Caribbean Sea:
It’s truly amazing that these were ‘long exposure’ images (each at 30 seconds), but the flashes of lightning themselves lasted no more than a split second.
This was my first attempt at lightning photography and I look forward… dare I say it… to the opportunity to capture more!
